BLACK MOON LILITH IN LEO
One of the first things we learn as Archetypal Astrologers is that Archetypes are multivalent.
Meaning that they express in a variety of ways. It’s easiest for us to group them in binaries. Such as them having Dark and Light emanations. But it’s always more complex than that. Each archetype creates a kind of map. A conglomeration of enmeshed patterns that lives in the collective.
For me, this is the most excellent fun. The excitement of mapping the web around an archetype matches the way my brain works. My Sun is in Scorpio, which means that existential detective work literally lights me up. Increases my life force.
Black Moon Lilith interpretation is a less developed area of Astrology. I’ve been drawn to her since reading the Book “The Witch of Cologne” by Tobsha Lerner, back in the early 2000’s. I was studying to be a midwife’s assistant with our local home-birthing collective at the time.
The main character in the book was a 1600th century midwife. As such, Lilith features prominently as the Mother of Demons and a Murderer of babies. She goes in depth about the fear the women had that Lilith would visit the birthing suite and take, either them, or their babies as they labored and have birth. This is an important function of the Lilith archetype. Her energy has the potential to “kill” the creation cycle.
They were so fearful of her that they hung amulets above the bed to keep her away. Some made offerings to Lilith. Gave her something other than a baby, hoping it would stave off her hunger for blood of innocence.
ASTROLOGY
In my studies and chart research, I find a clear correlation to Lilith and the “Death Mother”, or the “Anti-Mother”.
If the Moon represents the Mother, nourishment, safety, homeostasis, comfort, warmth, embrace, acceptance, the balanced emotional body, and the principle of growth, etc.
Then Lilith has the potential to bring about the antithesis of this. She can show up unconsciously as an anorexic principle, shrinking our capacity to play full out, making us feel small and unsure. She points to where shame cuts us off from our life force and full expression.
The Death Mother is a complex archetype, though important to understand. She is the one who injects psychological death into our experience through critical intent.
In Leo, this would manifest around our confidence, our ability to be seen, to be in the fullness of our light and shine it brightly, our ability to engage unhindered in joy, fun, and play. Innocently and with the enthusiasm and wonder of a child. And it will most certainly stir up places where our inner child is still frozen and in pain. Lacking the ability to be fully self expressed in the face of others.
So likewise, to be free from the chains of the Death Mother’s gaze results in…..
Sovereignty. Freedom from taking on the projections of others. Freedom from shame. From the critical intent of causing psychological death.
In her light emanation she is the Rewilding of our true, empowered nature. The rewilding of our essence. Our childlike innocence.
She has the capacity to delight in forbidden fruit.
She represents the place in which we’ve been cut off from our organic nature by the paradigm we live in. By our parents and the opinions of society. Cut off from owning our “darkness”, or the things others think are shameful and taboo.
Our Black Moon Lilith work is to move beyond Death Mother’s grasp, To revivify our essential self, the self that existed before we bathed in the criticism intent on dimming our light.
She helps us “reconnect” to the places of severing. To cultivate a relationship to the mystery, to the dark, to the groundlessness from whence we came, and shall again return.
She also helps liberate our inner mastery, the one that is forged through contact with the wild dimensions of soul.
Where we find her in our chart can give us an entry point into integrating this ancestrally disowned piece of ourselves. To healing the places this psychological death was injected into our experience, cutting us off from our essence. She invites us out of the "Garden" (places we play small to stay safe) to explore our edges.
Lilith is extraordinarily powerful to look at in Sessions.
In Leo, BML really is inviting us to express our uninhibited joy. To be fully seen.
To alchemize any piece of shame that prevents us from doing so.
She is going to be a big player over the next 19 months, as she is Conjunct the Sun and Venus at the seed point of the next Venus cycle.
So be prepared to play a big game!
